False Friends: Eventually vs Eventuellt
Publicerad 9 november 2015
Har du stenkoll på skillnaden mellan de olika begreppen och hur det påverkar dina möten med engelskspråkiga? Mike Ward, vår engelska coach lär dig skillnaden.
What is meant by the term, False Friend, when used in a linguistic sense? Here is an example. How would you interpret use of the word EVENTUALLY when you hear it used in English?
Would you quite understandably assume that it means possibly or perhaps, because the Swedish word EVENTUELLT means just that if translated to English? In fact, eventually as used in English actually means in the future which would translate as slutligen or så småning om in Swedish.
In a business context, it should be all too obvious how serious the potential consequences of trusting this False Friend could be, without reference to its true meaning. There are many more False Friends, and failure of their recognition can sometimes lead to some very comical exchanges of an unintended nature.
You really need to be aware of the identity of these! I, Mike Ward English Coach can assist in this vital process.
